Lawyer resume template for advocates and legal counsel

A legal resume is read the way a brief is: for precision. The reader wants your enrolment, the forums you appear before, the matters you have handled and what happened in them, without anything that breaches a client's confidence. This page covers how to write that into a layout with a clear label column.

Who this template suits

This template suits litigating advocates, associates moving between firms, and lawyers applying for in-house legal roles, where a partner or general counsel reads the resume and wants to find enrolment, forums and matters quickly.

Its label column works like the headings of a written submission: each section is announced once on the left, so a reader can scan straight to Employment History or Education without reading everything above it.

It scores strongly for parseability, so it is a reasonable choice for firm and company portals too. For a large portal with no named contact, a single-column layout is still the lower-risk option.

What this layout does

  • A header row: your name in bold capitals with the last word on its own line, your headline in the accent colour, and your contact details beneath; beside it, a large accent quotation mark opens the summary.
  • Each section below is a row, with its label right-aligned in accent capitals on the left and the content on the right: Employment History, Education, Skills, Languages, Courses and Projects.
  • Each role shows the title with dates in bold on the right, then the firm or company and location in a muted colour, then bullets.
  • Skills run as one comma-separated line. A skill group named Languages gets its own row, and certifications appear under the label Courses.

Before and after

Rewriting the bullets this audience gets wrong

A matter described by its client

Before
Represented ABC Pvt Ltd in their dispute with XYZ Builders.
After
Represented a logistics company in a contract claim over a delayed warehouse build; settled in mediation on terms recovering 85% of the claim.

Naming a client can breach confidence and tells the reader little. The type of client, the kind of dispute, how it was resolved and the result show the same experience without identifying anyone.

Appearances with no scope

Before
Appeared in various courts for many cases.
After
Argued interim applications in 40+ commercial suits before the Bombay High Court and the commercial courts in Mumbai.

A reader hiring for litigation wants the forum, the kind of hearing you conduct yourself and the volume. Various courts and many cases give none of the three.

Drafting claimed as a trait

Before
Excellent drafting skills.
After
Drafted plaints, written statements and interim applications across 60+ commercial matters, including pleadings for the firm's two largest arbitration claims.

Every lawyer claims good drafting. The documents you draft, the number of matters and the most significant work you led are what a senior reader can weigh.

ATS compatibility

How this layout behaves in a parser

Label column and reading order

The layout scores 88 of 100 (strong) on our Template Parseability Score. It loses 11 points for its two-column body, because a parser that reads across the page can interleave the label column with the content. Contact details still come out before work history, and Employment History, Education and Skills are headings a parser recognises.

One fragment ran together

In our scoring run, 9 of 10 sample content fragments came out intact, which costs 1 point. Copy the text out of your exported PDF once and check that role titles and firm names read cleanly.

Text, not graphics

The quotation mark is a text character, and there are no tables, skill bars or images. Email, phone and dates extract as plain text.

When to send a single-column version

For a portal application with no named recruiter, a single-column ATS-friendly layout with the same content is the safer choice.

Section by section

What belongs where

Summary and enrolment

Open with your State Bar Council and year of enrolment, and say if you hold the Bar Council of India certificate of practice, awarded on passing the All India Bar Examination. Then your years of practice, practice areas and main forums. Give the enrolment number if the application asks for it.

Employment History

For each role: the forums you appear before, the kinds of matters, the hearings and drafting you handle yourself, and two or three results. Describe matters without client names unless the matter is public record and your firm is comfortable with it being named.

Education

Degree, college and years. Moot court results, publications and a strong internship can go in as short details beneath the degree.

Skills and Languages

Name a skill group Languages to give languages their own row; the language of the courts you appear in can matter. Keep the rest to practice areas and specific skills such as arbitration or pleadings.

Courses

This row shows certifications under the label Courses, so keep it for actual courses, such as a certificate course in arbitration. Enrolment belongs in the summary, not here.

Quick checks before you send it

  • Put your Bar Council and year of enrolment in the first line of the summary.
  • Read every matter description once as if you were the client, and remove anything that identifies them.
  • Name a skill group Languages so the template gives it its own row.

Frequently asked questions

Should an advocate's resume include the enrolment number?

State the State Bar Council and year of enrolment in every version; they are what a reader checks first. Add the enrolment number when an application asks for it, since verification will need it.

Should I mention the All India Bar Examination?

If you have passed it, yes. The Bar Council of India conducts it and awards a certificate of practice to those who pass, and an employer hiring for a litigation role will want to know you hold one.

How do I describe cases without breaching client confidentiality?

Describe the matter by type, forum, your role and the outcome, and leave out client names and anything learned in confidence. Name a party only when the matter is public, for example a reported judgment, and your firm is comfortable with it.

How long should a lawyer's resume be?

One page early in practice and up to two pages after that. List representative matters rather than every case, and keep older roles to a line or two.
