What gets extracted from a job description
The matcher reads the job description and pulls out job title, hard skills, soft skills, tools, technologies, responsibilities, qualifications, certifications, experience requirements, and industry terms — ten separate categories, not one flat keyword list. Each category is scored separately, so 'you're missing three tools' and 'you're missing the required years of experience' show up as distinct, specific findings instead of one vague overall number.
Every extraction is deterministic: the same job description text produces the same result every time, with no AI model and no network call involved in this step. That's what makes the quick check on this page free to run as many times as you want.
- Hard skills, tools, and technologies matched against your resume text, including common synonyms (e.g. "JS" for "JavaScript").
- Years-of-experience requirements parsed from phrases like "5+ years" and compared against dates already in your resume.
- Responsibilities and qualifications checked separately from skills, since a resume can list the right tools but never describe doing the actual work.
What "missing" means — and doesn't mean
A keyword marked missing means exactly one thing: it wasn't found in your resume's text. It does not mean, and is never presented as meaning, that you lack that skill. Plenty of real skills never make it onto a resume simply because nobody thought to write them down.
That distinction matters because the fix for a genuine gap (learn the skill, or don't apply) is completely different from the fix for a wording gap (you already do this — say so). Never add a skill or claim you don't actually have just to close a gap this tool shows you.
Where AI comes in, and where it deliberately doesn't
Everything on this page — extraction, comparison, and every score — runs locally in your browser with no AI and no network request. The full in-builder experience adds one optional step on top: an AI semantic-match pass that can catch a near-miss a plain keyword search would miss (e.g. your resume says "led a team of 5," the JD asks for "people management" — related, but not the same words).
That AI step never runs silently. It requires an explicit privacy disclosure you acknowledge first, and it only ever sees a name/email/phone-stripped digest of your resume, never the full document. See our privacy policy's AI section for exactly what's sent.

Why does it say I have zero resume content?
This page reads whatever resume you already have open in the builder in this browser. If you haven't started one yet, there's nothing to compare against — start a resume first, or paste a job description anyway to see what it's actually asking for.
Is a 100% match a guarantee I'll get the interview?
No. This measures wording overlap between two documents, not hiring judgment, culture fit, or how a specific employer's applicant tracking system is configured. Treat a high score as a sign you've described your real experience in the job's own language, not as a prediction.
How is this different from the Job Match panel in the ATS Simulator?
They're two separate, independently maintained matching engines. This one (Job Description Matcher V1) extracts ten distinct requirement categories and supports an optional AI semantic-match pass in the builder; the ATS Simulator's Job Match panel is an earlier, simpler keyword-overlap check. Both are deterministic and free.
