Template Guide

Executive resume template built around scope and results

At executive level a resume is read for scale and judgement: how much you ran, what changed because you ran it, and whether the story is easy to verify. This page covers how to write to a structured grid that keeps a long career readable.

Who this template suits

This template suits directors, vice presidents and C-suite candidates with a long career to compress: people whose resume has to carry budgets, headcount, geographies and outcomes without turning into a wall of text.

It works well when a search firm has approached you or you are applying through a referral, where a person reads the resume first and a structured grid helps them find scope and results quickly.

If you are applying through a large applicant tracking portal with no named contact, keep a single-column version as well. This layout scores strongly for parseability, but a two-column body carries more risk with a strict parser than a single column does.

What this layout does

  • A header row with a circle holding your initials, your name in spaced capitals with the surname picked out in the accent colour, and your headline beneath.
  • A two-column body laid out in paired rows divided by hairlines: when every section is filled, Contact sits beside Summary, Education beside Work Experience, Skills beside Projects, and Certifications beside Links.
  • Each role on a single line as role and company, with dates aligned to the right and compact bullets underneath.
  • Skills as one compact bullet list in the narrow column; skill group names are not shown.

Before and after

Rewriting the bullets this audience gets wrong

A summary that lists traits

Before
Dynamic, visionary leader with a passion for driving growth and operational excellence.
After
Operations executive, 16 years in consumer goods distribution. Runs a 420-person network and has led two turnarounds from loss to profit.

Every executive claims vision. Years, sector, the size of what you run and a concrete track record let a reader place you in seconds, and each part can be checked.

A role described by its duties

Before
Responsible for overseeing all operations, logistics and supply chain functions for the company.
After
Runs four distribution centres, 420 staff and a $38M operating budget; cut cost to serve by 14% over three years while on-time delivery rose from 91% to 97%.

Duties describe the job, not you. Scope in numbers (sites, people, budget) followed by what measurably improved is what separates candidates at the same level.

Board work mentioned in passing

Before
Worked closely with the board on strategic initiatives.
After
Presented the three-year network plan to the board; approved as a $12M investment and delivered on budget in its first year.

Worked closely with hides your part. Naming what you brought to the board, what it decided and what happened next shows the governance experience senior roles look for.

ATS compatibility

How this layout behaves in a parser

Two-column reading order

The layout scores 86 of 100 (strong) on our Template Parseability Score. It loses 11 points for its two-column body, because a parser that reads straight across the page can interleave the columns. Contact details still come out before work history, all 10 sample content fragments extracted intact, and Experience, Education and Skills use headings a parser recognises.

The initials circle

The circle in the header shows your initials; the builder does not add photos. The score still counts it as space reserved for a photo, which accounts for the remaining 3 points.

Text, not graphics

There are no tables, skill bars or text drawn as images. Email, phone and dates are plain text, and headings use conventional styling.

When to send a single-column version

For an application through a large portal with no named recruiter, use a single-column ATS-friendly layout with the same content. Keep both; switching takes minutes.

Section by section

What belongs where

Summary

Three lines: function and years, the scale you run, and one or two outcomes a reader will remember. It sits at the top of the main column, beside your contact details, so it is the first thing read after your name.

Work Experience

For each role, open with scope (people, budget, sites or markets), then two or three results. Cover the last 10 to 15 years in detail and compress earlier roles to a line each.

Board and advisory roles

Add board seats and advisory roles as short Work Experience entries, each with what you contributed. Leave them out rather than list memberships with no role.

Skills

Group names do not show in this layout, so order the list with the capabilities a leadership reviewer looks for first, such as P&L ownership or M&A integration, rather than tools.

Education and certifications

Degrees and executive programmes, compact, in the narrow column. At this level they confirm rather than persuade.

Quick checks before you send it

  • Lead every role with scope in numbers before any result.
  • Cut adjectives from the summary; keep years, scale and outcomes.
  • Keep a single-column copy of the same content for portal applications.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an executive resume be?

Two pages is normal for a senior career, as long as the second page carries recent, relevant results. Compress roles older than about 15 years to a line each rather than adding a third page.

Should an executive resume include a photo?

Follow the norm where you are applying. In the US, UK, Canada and Australia most employers prefer no photo; in parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia one is common. This builder does not add photos: the circle in this template shows your initials.

How do I show results without breaching confidentiality?

Use percentages, ranges and relative change instead of exact confidential figures, and describe clients or products by type rather than name when they are not public. A reviewer needs the scale and the direction of change, not the internal numbers.

Is a two-column resume a problem for applicant tracking systems?

It carries more risk than a single column, because some parsers read across the columns. This template still scores strongly overall, but for portal applications with no named contact, send a single-column version of the same content.
