Guide
Annotating a PDF without re-typing the document
What this editor is for
This is an annotation tool, not a document reconstructor. It layers text, highlights, drawings, and signatures on top of a PDF's existing pages and exports the result as a new PDF. It does not reflow paragraphs, re-wrap text, or let you edit a sentence in the middle of a page the way a word processor would.
That distinction matters because the two jobs get confused constantly. If you need to change the wording of a contract clause, you need the source document. If you need to sign the contract, initial three pages, and mark one figure for review, that is annotation, and doing it here avoids the print-sign-scan cycle that degrades quality every round trip.
- Add text boxes anywhere on the page, including over existing content.
- Highlight passages for review without altering the underlying text.
- Draw freehand for corrections, arrows, or margin marks.
- Place a signature or initials image and reposition it before exporting.
Signing a document you were emailed
The common case is a PDF that arrives by email needing a signature and a date. Open it here, place your signature image where the signature line sits, add a text box for the date, and export. The result is a normal PDF that opens anywhere.
A signature image is worth preparing once and reusing. Sign a blank sheet of white paper in dark ink, photograph it straight on in good light, and crop tightly to the signature. That image will place more cleanly than one traced with a mouse, which almost always looks like it was traced with a mouse.
Where annotation is the wrong tool
Annotation cannot redact. Drawing a black box over a bank account number hides it visually while leaving the text underneath fully selectable and extractable — a well-documented way that supposedly redacted documents have leaked. If information must be removed rather than covered, remove it from the source document and re-export.
It also will not fix a scanned PDF that contains no text layer. A scan is an image of a page; you can annotate it, but you cannot search or select the words on it. That requires OCR, which is a different operation.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and rendered in your browser, and the exported PDF is generated there too. Nothing is transmitted to a server, which is why the tool keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF?
Not directly, and no annotation tool genuinely can. PDFs store text positioned absolutely rather than as flowing paragraphs, so changing a word does not re-wrap the line around it. You can cover old text with a filled box and type replacement text over it, but for anything more than a small correction, editing the source file produces a cleaner result.
Will my annotations be editable by whoever receives the file?
Treat them as visible but not tamper-proof. Annotations are exported into the PDF as content, so a determined recipient with the right software can modify them. For anything where non-repudiation matters legally, use a dedicated e-signature service that provides an audit trail.
Does the exported PDF keep the original quality?
Yes. The original page content is preserved and your annotations are drawn on top, so there is none of the quality loss that comes from printing and rescanning. File size grows slightly with each image you place.

Annotation happens in your browser. Nothing about a PDF you open here is uploaded to a server, so the tool works offline once loaded — and equally, a file you annotate is not stored anywhere for you to recover later.
