Which Verification Letter Do You Need?

Employment verification letter, bonafide certificate, NOC or internship completion certificate: who each one is for, and what it states.

Confirming something for someone else

Verification documents all confirm something about a person for someone else. The difference is what they confirm and who is reading.

What each one states

Employment verification letter. Written for a third party that needs to rely on it: a bank, landlord, embassy or background-check agency. It verifies employment status, designation and dates.

Bonafide certificate. Confirms a person is a genuine member of the organisation: an employee, a student or an intern. It attests association, and companies and colleges both use it.

No objection certificate (NOC). States that the organisation has no objection to a specific action by a specific person, such as travel abroad, an external examination or a passport application. It clears an action rather than attesting association.

Internship completion certificate. Certifies that an internship was completed, with its dates and role.

Which one do you need?

Start from who is asking, and for what:

  • A bank, landlord, embassy or verification agency needs employment confirmed: employment verification letter.
  • Someone needs proof the person genuinely belongs to the organisation: bonafide certificate.
  • An authority needs the organisation's consent to something the person is doing: no objection certificate.
  • An intern has finished: internship completion certificate.
  • A former employee needs proof of service for a new employer: experience letter or service certificate.

Frequently asked questions

How is an NOC different from a bonafide certificate? A bonafide certificate says the person genuinely belongs to the organisation. An NOC says the organisation has no objection to them doing a specific thing. Authorities sometimes ask for both, but they are not interchangeable.

Who is an employment verification letter addressed to? The third party relying on it. That audience is what separates it from a bonafide certificate, which is a general attestation.
